So, after listening to the word cleanliness what first strikes to our mind? A very clean place with fresh air blowing, everything around us is just so happy and we are feeling much more alive.
Now, imagine standing in a crowded and busy street, we might notice a lot of pollution around us and as we walked on that street we came across with a pile of garbage stinking badly.
I know this sounds disgusting but, this is the harsh reality of today. We humans are so busy with our life that we have almost forgot taking care of cleanliness not just in terms of keeping our surroundings clean, but also in terms of personal hygiene and the cleanliness of thoughts and soul.
Cleanliness is the most basic thing that we are being taught since the childhood but still, we compromise and neglect it. Maintaining cleanliness not just only helps to keep our surroundings clean but in addition to that it makes us feel much more comfortable and focused. Now some might just wonder HOW? For that lets assume a scenario in which, a person is working on his/her desk which is loaded with books and other useless stuff and he/she is not feeling comfortable nor he/she is able to concentrate. On the other hand, the same person is working on another desk which absolutely clean and tidy now he/she is much more concentrated, focused and comfortable. This example clearly shows that maintaining cleanliness helps us to live a healthy lifestyle.
Importance of maintaining cleanliness is also mentioned in holy books and to support this there is a very famous quotation which says that-
“Cleanliness is next to godliness”, which is absolutely right.
Now, apart from all this cleanliness of mind and soul is of utmost importance if a person wants to succeed in his/her life. Cleanliness here means to neglect all the negative thoughts and keeping only pure and virtuous feelings. In this way a person can absorb all the positivity which could make him/her lead a happy and successful life.
Now, let’s come to the main point “Why maintain cleanliness”? This is so because not maintaining proper sanitation could lead to many diseases and if not cured in time it could also lead to death. According to the data presented in 2017, 1.4% of the total deaths in the world are caused due to not maintaining proper sanitation. This percentage could also increase up to 5% for low income countries which is indeed a huge number. Therefore being the responsible citizens of our country we should take care of this fact. Now, many people think that it would make no difference if they will not contribute. But they are wrong because even taking small steps at individual level could help in making a big change.
At individual level people can take care of throwing their waste in the garbage, maintaining personal hygiene and also not to spit in public areas. In villages and remote areas awareness should be increased among the people regarding “not to defecate in the open”.
Also, a very important thing that we should keep in our mind is to keep tourist spots neat and clean because many tourists are in a habit of polluting hill stations and beaches which ultimately results in the degradation of environment.
Nowadays, the government of many countries are promoting campaigns related to cleanliness, especially in India many campaigns are organized such as the Clean India Mission which was started by our former Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. Also there are many schools, colleges and institutions which organize rallies, campaigns, competitions, debates and declamations on cleanliness which helps to create awareness among the youths. The students should be encouraged taking part in such activities because it not only enhances their knowledge but also helps in their social development.
Also, when a student gets enroll in the school the first lesson that is taught to him is of “Cleanliness”, through nursery rhymes. This shows that cleanliness forms the basis of a person and even helps in developing the personality.
Now imagine that there are two persons sitting in a room, the first person is nicely dressed, and had combed his hair neatly and is also smelling nice and on the other hand there is another person sitting who is wearing dirty and untidy clothes, his shoe laces are open and his hair looks like as if, it is a bird’s nest. Now, you have to decide who would you prefer talking?
Obviously the first one, although it is possible that the badly dressed person could be more educated than the first one. Now keeping both of these things in mind it can be concluded that a person is first judged by his personality (which comes from maintaining proper hygiene and cleanliness) and not by his/her qualification.
At last I want to say that we should actively take part in encouraging others and nowadays there are many organizations that are working for the betterment of our environment and nature. We should join with them and should work for a good because after all it’s our mother earth and it’s our duty to keep it clean. So not doing any delays we should start our work from today only and yes start with your own mind, body and soul, as its said-
“Cleanliness begins with the purity of your own mind, thoughts and heart”
